Individualized Study Skills Program (ISSP)

The Individualized Study Skills Program (ISSP) is designed to provide students with the academic support and coaching that they may need for certain courses throughout their academic careers. In order to become a participant in the ISSP, the student’s instructor or academic advisor must send an email requesting the student’s participation in the program while specifically addressing the type of assistance or support that the student requires from his/her assigned Academic Coach. A maximum of 15 students will be accepted per semester.

Upon admission into the ISSP, the student will participate in three 1-hour sessions with an assigned Academic Coach from The Learning Center. The student may receive a free assessment focusing on reading, study skills, or Praxis I if accepted into the ISSP, dependent upon the type of assistance requested per his/her instructor or advisor.

The sessions are designated as follows:

  • Session I – The Academic Coach will administer either the LASSI Study Skills Inventory, a reading inventory, or a Praxis I inventory. The choice of which inventory will be used is dependent upon need and requested assistance.

  • Session II – The Academic Coach will discuss and analyze the results of the administered test with materials and handouts for three of the weakest areas as well as different strategies for approaching the material and strengthening areas in which the student struggles in academically.

  • Session III – The final session is designed to act as a follow-up or continuation of assistance in the problem areas with a specific focus on the various resources available to the student both on campus and online.

All emails requesting information or requesting admission to the ISSP should be sent to tlc@tlc.msstate.edu .
